Next Big Thing: Hannibal Mejbri ‘takes the piss’ in training, likes a booking and looks well worth the millions Manchester United paid When Manchester United completed the signing of Hannibal Mejbri last August, those involved in the recruitment process were particularly pleased. “We’re really proud we’ve got him,” one said. “He’s going to be a talent.” At the time, he was just 16 but the price of purchase from Monaco — €5 million rising to €10 million with attainable add-ons — conveyed a special kind of belief in what his future could hold, as did the other clubs in pursuit: namely Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur. Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester City had also been credited with interest. United are understood to have held numerous meetings in France to make their proposal to Mejbri’s family. Then, 12 days before the signing was announced, Mejbri was invited to United’s friendly against Kristiansund in Oslo. “United really personally invested in it. They did it properly,” says an individual with knowledge of the process. Mejbri’s performances since have provided every encouragement that the conviction in his abilities was well-placed. Having only turned 17 in January, there is still a long way to go before any validation is confirmed but already he is standing out for United’s under-23s and getting experience of select first-team training sessions. “He has trained with the first team when certain groups have been away,” a source tells The Athletic. “Mainly technical stuff; not what you’d class as full training. In his frame, he is still a kid.” It is a sentiment echoed by Nicky Butt, head of first-team development at United. “When you’re a young player and you get brought in for a relatively big fee from a foreign club, you’re gonna have everybody watching you, and he’s aware of that,” Butt tells The Athletic. “He’s a very good player, talent-wise, or else we wouldn’t have brought him in, so that’s a given. “But he is still only a baby, just six months out of school. He has still got a lot of growing to do. He is a good size vertically but he needs to fill out, get stronger, and he needs to learn certain parts of his game — like they all do. “But we’re very confident in that he’s at a really good starting point. He’s a very hard-working boy and hopefully, given time, and not too much pressure, he’ll get to where we want him to be.” So, while recognition from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not necessarily on the agenda this season, there is cause to make Mejbri a subject of The Athletic’s Next Big Thing series when looking further into the future. “He is composed, can go past a player and break a line,” says a source with knowledge of under-23 training sessions. “He actually takes the piss sometimes against players a couple of years older than him. He’ll feint to strike then drag it and shoot the other way.” Tony Park, who co-wrote “Sons of United” about the club’s academy and regularly watches under-18s matches at Carrington, sees similarities in the way Ravel Morrison played when coming through. “Morrison made the game look so easy and Mejbri has the same style — a real natural talent,” Park says. “He is always running into really good positions and demanding the ball. He doesn’t get frustrated with other players who don’t give it to him. He just continues. The skills are there, the motivation is there.” United scouted Mejbri for at least three years and were impressed with his mental character as well as his ability. Hailing from the same Paris suburbs that bred eight members of France’s 2018 World Cup-winning squad, including Kylian Mbappe, N’Golo Kante, and Paul Pogba, there was fine precedent for footballing pedigree. French scout Mathieu Seckinger posted positive reports and eventually, head academy scouts at United watched him play for Monaco and France’s youth teams. This extensive diligence meant that when Mejbri’s family fell out with Monaco, United were in pole position to act. “Something bad happened,” Mejbri’s father Lotfi, a former Tunisian footballer, told Le Parisien in January 2019. “There were mistakes made and I consider the relationship of trust between the club and our family destroyed.” United, meanwhile, have worked to cultivate a welcoming environment for Mejbri. Butts says: “You’re always talking to them and we have a big support staff, player care team, teachers, really good school network, and within Carrington, we have the coaches who know what it’s like to get kids from all over the world. “We have French kids in the system and he speaks good English. He has good parents. Hopefully, it won’t be too hard for him. He seems to be thriving.” After a couple of under-18s games — including one against Everton where he got two assists — Mejbri made his under-23 debut in September, coming on after 60 minutes for a very young United side who were playing with ten men and 4-0 down. The game finished 4-1 and while it cannot all be attributed to Mejbri, he certainly brought control to United’s midfield, aged just 16. Since then, he has flitted between Neil Ryan’s under-18s and Neil Wood’s under-23s, and started against Leeds United in the FA Youth Cup tie at Old Trafford last Wednesday. His appreciation for space meant he was perfectly positioned to be sent clear in the first half but his finish was saved and from there, his authority ebbed. The 1,800 Leeds fans took particular pleasure in picking out Mejbri for chants about his voluminous hair and although there was a humorous Instagram post after the final whistle, perhaps the attention had some effect on his display. “Sideshow Bob?” Mejbri wrote, with a picture of The Simpsons character. “I admit that there is a small resemblance.” In the game, his annoyance at the officials and rival players was evident and though he has an impressive steel, sometimes it is better reined in. “He’s got a lot of bite but that can be too much as well,” says Butt. “You can be booked too much or just a bit too enthusiastic. But he’s a child. We try to let them develop.” Park adds: “He needs to work on his temperament. He seems to get booked every week. It’s almost like a petulance with referees for not getting the decisions he thinks he can get. On two occasions, the coaches have brought him off after being booked.” Mejbri’s frustrations often stem from when he has gone to ground after contact, believing a foul has been committed. But in time, his frame will fill out and it is hoped he will instead be able to push back physically, then impose his technique. As for his best position — No 10, deep midfield, No 8 — it is yet to be decided. “He could do a few and at that age, they’ll try them in a lot. There is no rush,” says a source. “If you’re excellent as a No 10, there is no point restricting him to that.” Мэйсон Гринвуд - будущий обладатель Золотого Мяча. |
